The two spaces thing is a matter of personal preference, I suppose. I am a one-spacer, myself (even in academic papers! o_O). However I've seen no evidence of true overpunctuation yet.

I think it's better to type correctly because it just comes naturally when I'm writing important things. Papers, for instance. I don't have to worry about proofreading because I'm spot on. :P

Precisely! And you can use phrases like "spot on" with more effectiveness than if they were to lack punctuation.
